What Motivates You To Work?

Have you ever found yourself in a position of resentment toward your job but you stay because of compensation? Unfortunately, this is an issue that many Americans experience every day. A vast majority of people work because they need money not because they are passionate about their career. In this article, I challenge you to reflect upon your current motivators and possibly reframe your mindset so that you are working toward something greater than a salary. Take a moment to read and reflect on the following questions:
- Are you able to make an impact in your current workplace?
- How is this job attributing to your overall health?
It is imperative to answer those questions honestly. Some studies have shown that 9 out of 10 people are willing to give up a percentage of their salaries in exchange for doing more meaningful work in their workplace environment. However, the question remains do they do something about their acknowledgement of an unfulfilled job? When we work toward something we love and are passionate about, we tend to spend more time and energy on it. On the flip side, when we work toward accumulating more wealth, we tend to compromise a lot of our morals and other important matters. The Bible doesn’t say that money is evil, but it does say that the LOVE of money is evil. Scripture states, “for the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows” (1 Timothy 6:10). The Bible also states, “so whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). Therefore, whether you’re a soon-to-be college graduate or have a 20-year tenure at a company, I challenge you to ask yourself what motivates you to go to work every day?
